EASTERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY RENEWABLE ENERGY CENTER

The plant houses two 40,000 lb/hr biomass boilers that now provide steam for the entire campus. These biomass boilers are capable of using wood chips or sawgrass as a fuel source; the latest in renewable energy design. In addition to providing steam, the plant also generates electricity in two ways. First a 550 kW turbine generator also powered by the biomass steam, and secondly a solar panel array that added another 20 kW. These electrical power sources not only supply plant power, but also dispense excess power to the grid. The plant has redundant steam generation capabilities with two 50,000 lb/hr additional boilers capable of burning natural gas or fuel oil.
